Osun Govt charges FCCPC to regulate prices of goods across Osun State

The Osun State Government has charged the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Agency, Osun Zone to quickly swing into action to regulate, with the fear of God, prices of goods and commodities across the State.

Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in Osun State, Rev. Bunmi Jenyo made this assertion during a courtesy visit of the agency to him in his office on Tuesday.

FCCPC is an agency of the Federal Government with the mandate to protect the interest of the Nigerian people. The commission is empowered by the FCCPC Act 2018 to promote fair business practices and safeguard the interest of consumers.

The Commissioner who described their visit as timely and kind gesture, noted the prevailing condition of unwarranted increase in prices of all commodities everywhere in Osun State, has become a serious concern of the current administration.

According to the Commissioner, “your agency should immediately start working on an awareness campaign to all associations, organizations, market men, women and other business stakeholders in the state, and the State government, under Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke will not hesitate to support you”.

He said the administration of Governor Adeleke will need FCCPC’s services to sanitize the market off unnecessary hike in prices of food items and other goods, across the length and breadth of the State.

The Commissioner who advocated synergy between FCCPC and Osun State Government, further charged the agency to carry the Ministry of Commerce and Industry along in the awareness campaign for necessary cooperation and support.

In her words, the FCCPC Zonal Coordinator, Mrs. Odo Janet said “we are committed to quality assessment of product and services through inputs into national and international standards, sampling analysis and issuance of guidelines and standard operating procedures to ensure that products, services and processes are of good, quality, safe and meet consumers’ expectations”.

She said that FCCPC will soon step up to create awareness to the associations, market men, women and organizations on how to go about their businesses, which will be of great benefits to the people of Osun State.

“With the increase in the cost of goods or services in the State, it is our responsibility to intervene and control the price accordingly”, Mrs. Odo said.

The meeting was also attended by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Mrs Kehinde Odediran and Deputy Director of Industry, Mr. O. T. Onigbinde.

Others are FCCPC team which include, Consumer and Business Education Officer, Mrs. Ademen Abimbola, Senior Scientific Officer, Mrs. Debo Ajakaye and Senior Officer 1, Mr. Okanlawon James Gbenga.
