DRIFT OF OSUN 2014 ELECTION PETITION: Why APC Applies For Forensic Examination of Election Materials, Ready To Defend Any Petition

The All Progressives Congress is seeking the permission of the Election Petitions Tribunal – set up for the Osun governorship election–to carry out forensic examination of the materials used for the conduct of the election and to inspect same documents.

The APC in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Tuesday filed an application before the tribunal to enable it carry out the examination of the electoral materials.

The application was filed by counsel to the party, who is also the National Legal Adviser of the party, Mr. Muiz Banire.

The application was filed on the day the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Iyiola Omisore, announced that he would file a petition to challenge the result of the election in court on Wednesday.

The APC is also seeking the order of the tribunal for physical inspection and inspection by machine/electronic scanning,of the materials used for the election in 23 local government areas.

According to the document made available to our correspondent, the applicant is also seeking, “Leave and order of the honourable Tribunal permitting handwriting and forensic expert(s) to conduct an inspection of Forms EC8A, EC8B, EC8C, EC8D, EC8E and all forms and materials used for the conduct of the governorship election in Osun State on the 9th day of August, 2014 in the 23 local government areas.

The application is supported by a twenty-paragraph affidavit deposed to by one Mr. Abdulrahman Okunade, a lawyer, as well as a written address.

The affidavit in support of the application stated that the APC intended to defend any petition as may be filed by any of the parties that lost the election and is challenging the results thereof.

The APC also required inspection of all electoral documents and materials mentioned in the motion “in order to effectively defend such petition and object to certain votes cast in a number of the polling units contained in some of the local government area.”
